Relief of gout at home with the help of home remedies

Gout is caused by the overproduction or improper excretion of uric acid. It is a form of arthritis wherein affected joints become swollen and is accompanied by severe pain in some cases. Here are some natural remedies to help with the problem:

  • Keep the affected part elevated if possible and immobile.
  • For intense pain OTC painkillers may be needed. Please speak to a doctor in that case. But do avoid aspirin and acetaminophen as they may make the condition worse
  • A poultice made of activated charcoal powder and flax seed may be applied. Take half a cup of activated charcoal powder and mix with 3-4 tablespoons of flax meal. Add enough water to make a paste. After applying the poultice use a gauze pad to hold it in place for at least half an hour
  • Taking activated charcoal internally also helps reduce the level of uric acid.
  • Applying an ice compress may also help with the pain.
  • Drink plenty of water and try and cut down on alcohol consumption. If possible, don't drink at all.
  • Avoid food that have a high purine content and take only one serving of foods with a moderately high purine content.

High purine foods:

  • hearts
  • mussels
  • yeast
  • herring
  • sweetbreads
  • sardines

  • mutton
  • grouse
  • veal
