Control Premature Hair Graying in Men

by Shaun Damon

Male hair loss and graying are both natural phenomenon over which we have little control. In most cases, the genetic code of our DNA already defines when our hair start turning white, or start falling off. However, both these things happening at your age is not so common. Perhaps the main cause of hair loss (alopecia) in young men is linked to testosterone, the male hormone by your body. In some cases, high levels of testosterone can lead to male-pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia). If you are losing hair mainly in the front and top of your head, chances are you have this condition. Hair loss has also been linked to stress, hormonal changes, physical damage, fungal infections, and some systematic, chronic diseases. In most cases, once the root cause is identified by your doctor, it can be treated and your hair loss should stop. The graying of your hair may also be linked to the same medical condition. Though it not possible to reverse graying, you may be able to slow down the process.

While you get treated by a doctor, you should also begin some home remedies and adopt hair care guidelines that can help to reduce hair fall and graying. Check if your drugstore has a shampoo with caffeine as an ingredient, since some studies indicate that direct application of caffeine to hair can stimulate hair revival. However, do not try this with regular coffee! If you want to directly nourish the hair, try a massage with warm natural oils, such as coconut, live, or almond. This also helps to revitalize the scalp and increases blood flow to the hair follicles (roots). For best results, you can wrap your head with a hot towel for around ten minutes after the massage. In the shower, avoid alcohol-based products and hot water, which can damage the hair even further.

You could try massages with primrose or flaxseed oils, which provide your hair with essential nourishment in the form of 'good' omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. You can these fatty acids in the form of oral supplements. Daily dosages of multi-vitamins can also benefit hair growth. Ensure that your diet is low in oily, fatty foods and eat fresh, green vegetable with minerals such as zinc, potassium, and iron. Take up some form of regular exercise, since this will reduce stress levels (a major contributor to hair fall and graying) and maintain overall wellness.
