Diagnosis of Anthrax


For an accurate diagnosis of anthrax, different types of tests can be used. Depending on the type of anthrax suspected, tests for anthrax will include:

  • Skin culture or skin biopsy on lesions or sores to identify the anthrax bacteria
  • Blood tests to confirm an infection
  • Chest x-ray or a CT scan
  • Spinal tap to check for an infection around the spine
  • Sputum culture
  • Fluid and blood tests
  • PCR, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemistry tests
