Prevention from Hepatitis B

Apart from the vaccine, you can prevent Hepatitis B in the following ways:

  • Practice safe sexual relations. Using latex condoms helps to prevent transmission of the virus. However, condoms are not 100 percent effective in this regard.
  • Men who have sexual relations with men should receive both hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccines.
  • Avoid injecting drugs and sharing needles.
  • Avoid sharing any personal items with traces of blood on it such as razors or toothbrushes.
  • Since hepatitis B can spread through open cuts and wounds, it is important to cover them properly with a bandage.
  • Educate yourself about the risks before getting tattoos or body piercings. You may contract the virus in case the needles and other instruments used are not sterilized.
  • Health care workers must take the proper precautions when handling needles and other sharp instruments.
