Treatments for Croup

Treatments for croup include:

  • Bringing your child to a steamy bathroom or exposure to the cool night air. Alternatively use a cool air vaporizer near the child's bed to provide some relief.
  • Your doctor may prescribe medications to reduce swelling in the upper airways. These could include corticosteroids that are taken orally or injected or aerosolized racemic epinephrine. In case the cause of croup is due to a bacterial infection, antibiotics will be required.
  • If a foreign object obstructs the airway, intubation may be required. This involves placing a tube to the larynx through the nose or mouth.
  • Since croup often leads to dehydration, intravenous liquids may be administered.
