Risk Factors of Autism

There are certain risk factors that increase the incidence of autism in children such as:

  • Children of older parents
  • Premature birth
  • Low birth weight
  • Sex of the child (boys are more likely to have autism than girls)
  • Other birth defects
  • Identical twins
  • Family history of autism

Children suffering from other medical conditions such as Fragile X syndrome, neurological disorders, and epilepsy have a higher risk of developing autism.
