A pinched nerve refers to a compression of a nerve and occurs when too much pressure is applied to it by the surrounding cartilage, tendons, muscles or bones. A pinched nerve in the shoulder restricts the proper functioning of the shoulder and results in weakness in the adjoining muscles, numbness, a tingling or twitching sensation or sharp pain shooting out from the affected area. The main cause of a pinched nerve is a restricted flow of blood to the nerve root.
This condition is aggravated by strenuous manual work, wrong posture while sitting or working or sleeping awkwardly. The nerves are responsible for carrying messages to the brain and back, from all the parts of the body. When pinched, the nutrients stop flowing freely to and fro and the nerve fiber may die leading to the numbness and restricted movement of the muscles. A deficiency of calcium can lead to pinched nerves and muscle pain. A pinched nerve in the shoulder may indicate a muscle spasm, spondylitis or spondylosis.
Sufficient rest is recommended for treating a pinched shoulder. Improving your posture while sitting, sleeping or working will provide relief as it improves the blood flow to the affected nerve root. Hunching or sleeping in awkward positions restricts the flow of blood to the root of the nerve resulting in increased pain and discomfort. Avoid using a pillow when sleeping as it slows down the healing process. An ice pack placed on the affected area is known to numb the area and reduce the pain. A hot, moist towel placed on the shoulder relaxes the nerves. A paste made with honey and cinnamon powder applied to the affected area for eight-ten minutes and then washed off with plain water absorbs the pain caused by a pinched nerve. However, you should be very careful when trying this remedy as it may leave the skin sore due to the exothermic nature of cinnamon. Warm mustard oil applied gently to the area helps to loosen and relax the nerves. The juice of a raw potato applied to the area and washed off when it is dry quickens the healing process.
Regular exercise and a healthy heart ensure a proper supply of blood to the various nerves in the body. A brisk walk and light stretching exercises daily can prove beneficial in improving blood circulation to the nerves. Healthy eating habits complete with vitamins and minerals like calcium, potassium and zinc is essential for healing the pinched nerve.

Natural cure for pinched nerve
A pinched nerve in the shoulder area could also indicate the more severe problem of spondylitis, or spondylosis, or even a muscular spasm. The first thing you should do is get a medical examination and determine that it is not that, because spondylitis is a problem that has far reaching effects and requires a fixed regimen of cure. For relief from the pain, you could try to use ice packs to numb the area for a while. If the pain is really severe, this should offer comfort. Make a paste of cinnamon powder and honey and apply to the area. Leave it on for 10 minutes to begin with, and wash off with plain water. This is a highly effective remedy to draw out the pain from your shoulder. However, a side effect of this remedy is that it could cause your skin to redden and burn, due to the exothermic nature of cinnamon. Sleep without a pillow. Try not to hunch. This should also help considerably. So start slowly and increase the duration as you go along. The most important thing and the best available remedy is rest. Once your problem is taken care of, exercise daily. The best thing to do is take a brisk 30-minute walk everyday.
