Health Advice For Nausea In Babies: Is there anything that I can give to my 5 month old baby for nausea? He has been throwing up all night long.

Nausea is a feeling of wanting to vomit, and it happens mostly due to food poisoning, indigestion, infections, motion sickness, psychological conditions, or certain medications. Babies too can undergo nausea, but they would be unable to express it. In small babies, as young as five months, nausea could be due to any imbalance in their system or due to emotional disturbances. It could also be an underlying reason for something more serious, and in such cases, medical attention is needed.

Causes for Vomiting in Babies

A baby might spit up food or liquid for no reason at all. It could be due to overfeeding, intolerance to milk or baby formula, and not burping after feeding. Vomiting in babies could be because of gastroenteritis, a viral stomach infection. The other symptoms that could accompany it are diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fever. In some cases, vomiting can be due to pneumonia, urinary tract infections, or strep throat. When a toddler has nausea and vomiting, it is imperative to ensure that the baby has not consumed any household cleaning agents or medication.

Treatment

If the baby is throwing up, it is important to give special care as they tend to get dehydrated soon. In other words, it is important to replace lost fluids. Small amounts of clear liquids like electrolyte solutions and oral rehydration solutions must be given. Other liquids that can be given are water, fruit juices, or ginger ale; all in small amounts, as too much fluid at this stage can make the babies throw up more.

If you are breastfeeding, breast milk is the best to rehydrate the baby and also help the baby recuperate well. In case the mother is breast feeding, the mother can have ginger or garlic based foods, which may help to indirectly get rid of any infections. Bottle fed babies do need clear liquids.

Home Remedies

Some of the home remedies for throwing up and nausea in babies are as follows.

  • Ginger tea can be made by crushing or grinding some ginger and boiling it in water. One teaspoon of the strained liquid can be given once a day.
  • Fenugreek seed powder can also be made into tea, and the one teaspoon of the liquid can be given to the baby.

These home remedies soothe the stomach and also clear the infection. Keep in mind that these home remedies are not scientifically proven; hence, it is best to consult a doctor first before attempting any of them.

It is important to keep away solids and reintroduce them slowly after six hours of not vomiting. Look for signs of severe dehydration, when the child cries without tears, the urine is darker in color, or the child has a dry mouth. The child could be irritable, and if the child has persistent nausea and throws up along with abdominal pain, it is important to call your health care provider.

First of all try to know the exact cause why your baby is so nauseated. Have you tried to introduce any new food besides breast milk? Remember babies should be exclusively breastfed for first six months and then other foods should be introduced gradually one by one. Try these home remedies to ease nausea of your child -

  • Mix a teaspoon of ginger powder in honey and give him this mixture 3-4 times a day.
  • Rub some arrack drops on his stomach for few minutes and then cover the stomach.
  • Lemon water can also be given to curb nausea.
  • Vomiting can cause water loss from the body. Make sure to give him adequate water and keep him hydrated.
