Relation between running and depression



Lack of self esteem can be one of the biggest contributors, for depression in many people. In order to reduce the risks of depression that stems from obesity and low self esteem, experts recommend exercising for at least half an hour on a daily basis. Exercising not only helps you to stay fit and lose weight, but a good work out, especially running, releases endorphins in the body, that are known as natural antidepressants, mainly because they give a person of high. Moreover, these endorphins also help in blocking pain and inducing a natural feeling of euphoria. In addition to that, people tend to get hooked on to losing weight because of running and in the process, they become more energetic and stronger and look healthier. Therefore, running and depression are inversely related, as running can help a person look good and feel fit. Given below are some tips, that can help set the ball rolling for running for depression:

  • Running shoes are meant to provide a cushion to your feet, as they pound the ground. Get a good pair of running shoes for yourself, so that your feet are well supported.
  • Never start running, without warming up first. Skipping the warm up exercises can cause you to pull a muscle. Walk for around 5 minutes, at a comfortable pace, in long and smooth strides. Avoid jogging, because jerky movements could wear out your knee cartilage, resulting in knee pain, which can gradually affect your ability to run, or even walk properly, in the future.
  • Cooling down after running is as important as warming up. After you finish running, walk for about 5 minutes or so.
  • Eating well is very important, for people who are running. This form of exercise is an excellent calorie burner. However, you would require a lot of energy and therefore, even if you are trying to lose weight, you need to eat proper and balanced meals. In order to eliminate unnecessary calories from your diet, it is alright for you to cut down on extra snacks and foods that are fattening, high is sugar and calories.
  • Watch your posture when you run. Keep your shoulders relaxed, avoid looking down, pull your navel in towards your spine and avoiding clenching your fists. Make sure you breathe properly, while running.
  • You will lose a lot of fluid, when you sweat while running. Drink a lot of water to replenish the fluid. Make sure that your drink a glass of water before and after running.
