The birth of a baby is an occasion which is responsible for a range of emotions. You may experience excitement, joy, fear as well as anxiety. This event may also trigger off an emotion that maybe completely unexpected, and that is depression.

A number of new mothers experience some degree of depression after childbirth. Recent studies have shown that up to 10 percent of new mothers experience an acute form of emotional upheaval medically referred to as postpartum depression. In a few rare cases, this can even lead to an extreme form of postpartum depression, referred to as postpartum psychosis. It is important to note that postpartum depression is not considered to be character flaw nor is it a weakness. It is simply a part of the birthing process.

Symptoms of postpartum depression vary depending upon the kind of depression. A minor condition is known as Baby Blues which lasts for only a few days of weeks. The symptoms of postpartum depression may need you to believe that you are experiencing the baby blues. However, the symptoms defining postpartum depression tend to be far more intense. Medical science has yet to isolate the exact causes of postpartum depression. Factors such as physical, emotional and lifestyle may all be responsible.

And there has not been much research done on natural or alternative therapies or postpartum depression. Whilst there is some data available, it is not definitive at all. It would be a good idea to discuss any natural alternative therapies that you may be aware of which your doctor. A doctor would be in the ideal position to evaluate the symptoms and recommend the appropriate course of action.

Some therapies that can be considered include acupuncture. This therapy is beneficial in promoting being relaxation, leading to effective sleep. It may also be useful in relieving the fatigue that usually accompanies postpartum depression. Omega-3 fatty acids are considered to be effective in supporting infant brain development during the course of the pregnancy. Regardless of whether these fatty acids are consumed in the form of fish, other seafood or as nutritional supplements, new research indicates that these healthy fatty acids may be beneficial in relieving postpartum depression as well. Massage therapy can also be used to alleviate the symptoms of postpartum depression. It is a good idea to indulge in the creative arts, such as music, art appreciation and drama therapy. These are now believed to be effective in relieving postpartum depression, by creating a supportive and relaxed environment.
