Tardive dystonia is a type of Dystonia. This is a neurological disorder which causes muscle contractions and involuntary movement. This disorder can be inherited or it may be caused by birth related factors.
It may also be caused by physical trauma and poisoning. However, one of the main causative factors is a reaction to neuroleptic drugs. Tardive dystonia is classified as a type of secondary dystonia and the causes for it are identifiable. Tardive dystonia generally causes jaw spasms and tongue protrusion. However it can also cause strong contractions of the arm or leg or affect body posture. It is therefore very important to consult a specialist who will be able to identify and correct your condition. Tardive dystonia is often brought on by antipsychotic drugs. Risperidone and olanzapine are two anti-psychotic drugs that have been linked to Tardive dystonia. Clozapine is another drug that could be a causative factor but this has not yet been verified. Anti-emetics and antidepressants too may aggravate or even cause this condition. It may be necessary to discontinue these medications. However, if you discontinue it abruptly, you will risk suffering from withdrawal emergent syndrome. You will have to slowly lower your dosage so that it tapers off. However, it is very important to keep in mind that no matter what your condition is, you should not stop any medication without first consulting your doctor. Furthermore, immediate treatment for the condition will help to prevent it from getting worse and will shorten the recovery period.
There are several medications and treatments for this condition and your doctor will be able to guide you as per the severity of the case and your medical history. As far as possible monotherapy is preferred as there are much lower chances of suffering from negative reactions. Some of the common treatments for this condition include clonazepam, reserpine and anticholinergics. Botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botox, is also an effective though temporary treatment for this condition. Vitamin E has been seen ton be beneficial in prevent and treating this condition. Although it is not a cure, Vitamin E helps to lessen the symptoms. Keep in mind that Vitamin E can be toxic in larger amounts and so you need to discuss your dosage with your doctor.
Tardive dystonia is caused by a chemical imbalance and cannot be treated with natural remedies alone. However a healthy diet will help to ensure that the body is receiving essential nutrients which aid the healing process. A regular exercise routine can also help to strengthen the muscles and promote normal co-ordination. It would be best to chalk out a diet and exercise plan with the help of your doctor.
