Stye is an inflammation or infection of the secretory glands of the eyelid. This inflammation or infection is the result of blocked glands. When a gland gets blocked, the oil which is produced by the gland gets backed up and extrudes through the walls of the gland.
This forms a nodular lump on the eyelid which can be red and painful. When bacteria infect this lump it aggravates the symptoms and can spread redness on the lid and around the eye. The lump can point outward or inward and can be on the top or bottom of the eyelid. Other symptoms of stye are swelling of the eyelid, pain, redness, tenderness to touch, burning in the eye, droopiness of the eyelid, scratchy sensation on the eyeball, blurred vision, mucous discharge in the eye and crusting of the eyelid margins.
Stye is caused due to obstructed openings or orifices of the oil glands in the eyelid. Quite frequently it is infected by bacteria. The most common bacteria causing this infection is staphylococcus. Seborrhea which is the excessive production of oil by the secretory glands increases the likelihood of one developing this infection. The blockage of these glands is caused by improper or incomplete removal of eye makeup, use of outdated or infected cosmetics, poor eyelid hygiene, stress, hormonal changes or other inflammations of the eyelid such as meibomitis, rosacea and blepharitis.
Some home remedies can help reduce the symptoms of stye. Make a herbal solution with parsley, acacia leaves and bancha leaves. Roast bancha leaves and then boil them along with the parsley leave and acacia leaves. Let it boil for 10 minutes. Dip a clean cloth in this solution and apply it on the stye. Throw away the solution after every application. Castor oil can also reduce the inflammation caused by the stye. Dip a cotton swab in castor oil and apply it on the stye. Do this at least twice a day. Get a gold piece of jewelry, preferably more than 18 carats and which should have surface area such as a thick ring or a wedding band. Put it on the stye. Along with these remedies, apply hot compress on the stye. Apply it at least twice a day. One can also use tea bags. Apply warm, moist teabags of black tea on the stye. Leave the tea bag on the stye. The tannic acids present in tea can help shrink the stye.
