Styes or sties, as they are known, are painful and pimple like sores that form on the eyelids. They are mostly the result of a bacterial infection or due to clogging of oil glands in the area around the eyelashes. The condition is actually quite harmless although it is extremely annoying and quite painful.

A stye is easily recognizable as it causes a distinctive swelling or lump on the eyelid. The region also takes on a reddish appearance and becomes very tender, and there would most likely be a burning or scratchy sensation in the eye.

Styes can be treated quite easily at home without the need for any pharmaceutical or medical aides.

Most styes will in fact resolve naturally, with them draining on their own. This natural process can however be sped up with some natural remedies. Natural remedies can also help relieve the pain and irritation, making the duration of the stye a lot more bearable. A stye should resolve within a weak with treatment. Hot or warm compresses are among the most commonly used treatments for styes and are surprisingly effective. Apply these compresses for around five or ten minutes at a time, and make it a point to do this at least three or four times in a day for the duration of the symptoms. This will not only promote healing, but will also relieve the irritation. Warm compresses also increase blood supply to the region, and this action helps the body fight the bacterial infection more effectively.

You can also use a tea bag soaked in warm water like a compress. Just place it over the affected eyelid and allow it to remain there for a few minutes. The sty should reduce in size with this treatment. Its effectiveness is attributed to the tannic acid that is present in tea.

In addition to the home treatments you should also be aware that if you do normally wear contact lenses it would be best to switch to spectacles for a while, or you may even need to replace the contact lenses after the stye heals, so as to eliminate the risk of a recurrence or spreading of the infection. Make sure you never put pressure on or attempt to pop or squeeze a sty as this will only cause you immense pain and prolong or worsen the infection. Make sure you also follow strict personal hygiene and wash your hand thoroughly whenever you touch the eye as the infection could spread to your other eye or to someone else.
