Bedbug infestations are a nuisance and the problem is encountered worldwide. These blood sucking ectoparasites feed on not just humans (their preferred hosts), but on most mammals and birds as well. These tiny wingless parasites generally tend to emerge and feed at night, and when not feeding they inhabit dry and dark crevices as you would find in cracks in the walls, in floorboards, in the seams of mattresses, in furniture and wallpaper, and in staircases or carpets.
Their only food source is blood, but they are very resilient because of the fact that they can go for a year without a meal.
Since they tend to be active at night you would be asleep and most likely not be woken by the bite, as the bite itself is painless. Bedbug bites are generally not a cause for much concern as in most cases they pose no threat other than the fact that they do cause some intense irritation and itchiness.
The reaction to the bites also varies from individual to individual in intensity and severity. The main risk is an infection due to scratching at the bite marks. Under rare circumstances however bedbugs can be a vector for diseases like Hepatitis B or Chagas disease.
The good news though is that the bedbug crisis is one that can be dealt with quite easily. Relieving the itching is just one facet of the approach and it is more important that you get rid of the bugs. The itchy sensation and soreness that you experience from a bedbug bite is more of a reaction than anything else. This allergic reaction to the insects’ saliva varies amongst individuals, which is why some will barely feel an itch, while others may be in agony. If you experience a very severe reaction with any other symptoms as well make sure you visit a doctor.
Once bitten the only thing you can do is try and relieve the pain and irritation by applying calamine lotions, coconut oil, or cool compresses. These will of course only relieve the itch and are temporary solutions. Call up your local pest control service provider to fumigate your quarters and get rid of those pests. Bed bugs are pretty resistant to most home treatments and trying to cut costs by getting rid of them yourself will only allow them to take better hold and make the problem harder to root out.
