I'm 41 years old, experiencing UTI and lack of sleep

Among the many urinal problems, urinary tract infections or UTI are the most common. This infection is caused by the E.coli bacteria which enter the urinary tract through the urethra. If the infection occurs in the lower urinary tract, the condition is known as Cystitis and if the infection occurs in the urethra, the condition is known as urethritis. A urinary tract infection is serious as both these conditions combined. Urinary tract infections may occur due to improper hygiene of the genital and anal area. Bacteria that are usually present around the anus may enter the urethra and cause an infection. Holding the urine in the bladder for prolonged periods of time may also cause UTI. This is because the accumulation of the urine weakens the bladder muscles. As a result the bladder is unable to empty out completely. The urine that is left behind is prone to infection. Women tend to be more susceptible to UTI due to the shorter length of the urethra. In men, conditions such as sexually transmitted diseases, enlargement of the prostate and bladder stones may result in UTI.

UTI may lead to other urine problems in men if the condition is not treated early. Many also face a urine retention problem once the urethra becomes inflamed and swollen. The symptoms of UTI include irregular urine output, pain or tingling while urinating, pain in the lower abdomen, lower back and sides of the body and fever. In many cases, nausea and vomiting and blood in the urine may also occur. Urinary tract infections that are left untreated may travel further up the urinary tract and lead to kidney infection. Antibiotics are mainly used to treat UTI. The severity of the condition will determine the type of antibiotics that need to be used. Pain relieving medications may also be prescribed to alleviate discomfort. There are also some uti infection home remedies. Drinking plenty of water is very beneficial for flushing the bacteria out of the system. Intake of cranberry juice is also a popular remedy for UTI as it prevents the bacteria from adhering to the bladder walls. Increasing the intake of vitamin C helps to increase the acidity of the urine and hence prevents growth of bacteria.

There are many different types of sleeping problems such as insomnia, sleep apnea and narcolepsy. These may result from factors such as stress, irregular bedtime routines or physical causes. Lifestyle changes usually help to alleviate the problem. In case the condition is severe and persistent, it is advisable to consult a doctor.
