Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory disorder of the alimentary canal and affects any area from the mouth to the anus. Crohn’s disease can relapse and can also be chronic in nature. The onset of Crohn’s disease could be due to various reasons such as age, hereditary, low immunity, dietary intake and infections.

This gastro intestinal disorder manifests itself through various symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding and fever. Chronic Crohn’s disease can lead to associated complications and disorders such as arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, blockage of the intestine and weight loss. Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) cause high levels of toxins causing other unfavorable conditions such as skin boils, canker sores and longer healing periods for smallest of wounds.

Diet plays an important role in inflammatory bowel diseases; it can help control or aggravate the condition. Therefore, it is important to understand the types of food that can help control the disease and eliminate the disease naturally. Primarily, eating raw foods or juices is ideal to make it easy on the stomach to digest and process the food. Raw foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables also add nutritive value helping the body and the digestive system. It is also advisable to avoid all types of oily, fried and fatty foods to reduce the load on the digestive system. Avoidable foods also include red meat, butter, mayonnaise and spicy condiments. Other troublesome foods include potatoes, cabbage, beans and broccoli. Stimulants such as tea, coffee, carbonated drinks and alcohol should also be avoided till the digestive system is under control.

Digestive system is best aided with a high fiber diet. Foods containing fiber such as whole grains, oat bran, unpolished rice, bananas, fruits and vegetables with skin aids the digestive system. Inflammatory Bowel Diseases like Crohn’s disease can either accommodate fiber or turn unfavorable to such foods but it is indeed beneficial provided your digestive system accepts it. Drinking plenty of liquids is another way to keep your body hydrated and help flush out the toxins. Make it easy for your digestive system by eating smaller meals at short intervals rather than three large meals.

A healthy mind is the way to a healthy body so try a few relaxation techniques such as moderate exercise, any favorable hobby, meditation, yoga to de-stress and help the body and mind recuperate. Mild to moderate exercise such as walking, swimming or any form of sport can help regularize bowel functions.

While there is no home remedy to treat crohns disease,

treatment options involve :

  • medications,
  • nutrition supplements,
  • surgery or
  • a combination of these.

The treatment should aim to control inflammation, relieve the symptoms of abdominal pain, diarrhea and bleeding through rectum.

Treatment helps to control the disease by reducing recurrences but there is no cure for this.

For further assistance, consult a gastroenterologist.
