It is not uncommon to complain of a burnt tongue after drinking scalding hot beverages or eating something that has just come off the stove. In case you have burnt your tongue by consuming something that is extremely hot, you can take a spoonful of sugar, place it on your tongue and hold it against the roof of your mouth till it melts. This provides instant relief from the burning sensation and helps to hasten the healing process.
Apart from this, you could rub an ice cube on your tongue until the sensation of being burnt fades. You can apply some glycerin on your tongue as an effective home remedy for a burnt tongue. Alternately you can apply some clarified butter prepared at home on your tongue.
This coats the tongue, like the glycerin, reducing the burning sensation and allows you to eat without the spices in the food irritating your tongue. Drinking strong black of orange pekoe iced tea with plenty of ice cubes is also excellent to treat a burnt tongue. You should avoid brushing your teeth using toothpaste while you are affected by the burning tongue syndrome since some of the ingredients may irritate the tongue.
Sometimes a burning sensation in the tongue is not caused by consuming something hot, but due to nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, inflammatory disorders, medications and certain food products that dehydrate the mouth and tongue and restrict production of saliva. It can also happen due to a problem in the network of nerves in the tongue or because of a decreased flow of blood in the tongue. To avoid burning tongue syndrome you should ensure that your diet is rich in vegetables and fruits with high content of Vitamin B and C, iron and other minerals. Consume plenty of water and green leafy vegetables to keep your body well hydrated and your body temperature in control. Fruits, especially citrus fruits are excellent to increase the saliva production in the mouth and thus reduce the chances of your tongue being burnt easily as well as the burning tongue syndrome. Avoid hot beverages such a tea and coffee and oily, spicy foods. You should drink a glass of milk with a spoonful of honey to increase the blood flow in the tongue and thus avoid burning tongue syndrome. Chewing on a sweetened gum also helps since it stimulates production of saliva which in turn soothes the burning tongue.
