(27 Dec 2006)

Acne could cause a person a lot of stress and anxiety. Even when the acne infection goes, it can be quite difficult to get rid of the scars. Most people suffer with acne scars for years and are unable to do anything to get rid of them.

Having acne or acne scars could cause a person to feel low and depressed. They may lose their self confidence and self esteem and may not even want to be seen in public. There are various remedies that are available that can help one in reducing these scars and getting rid of the infection. These scars are usually visible on a person’s face, back, neck area and chest area.

Some of the simplest and most efficient remedies include making a mixture of lemon juice along with some rose water. Apply this all over one’s face and leave it on for about 15 to 20 minutes to dry off. Once it is dried, simply wash it off with water. This leaves the skin feeling soft and supple and will help in getting rid of the scars from acne. Another useful remedy is to try applying some freshly grated cucumber all over one’s face. This helps in acting like a cooling agent and also in reducing the acne and the resulting scars. This paste should be kept on one’s skin for at least half an hour for it to work.

One can try crushing some fresh garlic pods and mixing it with honey and applying this directly on to the pimples. It helps in drying up the pimples and thus reducing the acne.

Aloe vera juice works very well in the treatment of acne. One can simply try taking a fresh piece of aloe vera plant and applying the pulp directly over the infected area. This will help in reducing the scarring and also prevent further acne from occurring. One can also try extracting the juice of the aloe vera plant and drinking this every morning. It helps in flushing out the toxins from the body and thus reducing the acne. One can even try washing one’s face with a solution of apple cider vinegar. This helps in reducing the facial oil and thus reducing the occurrence of pimples. Tea tree face washes are also useful for this purpose. One should try drinking plenty of carrot juice and other fresh juices. Remember to drink plenty of water, at least 8 to 10 glasses in a day.

After acne has healed, red or hyperpigmented marks may be left behind on the skin. These are not really scars, but changes that occur after inflammation. The redness or hyperpigmentation develops because of the healing and remodeling process that the skin undergoes. This process may continue for about 6-12 months. If further acne lesions do not develop in the area, the skin heals normally. If the hyperpigmentation or skin defect is still present after one year, it is said to be a permanent defect or scar.

When treating early acne scars it is important to avoid excessive exposure to the sun as this causes additional skin damage and also delays the healing process. As such wearing a good sunscreen lotion is essential. One must also avoid picking at the scabs. Scabs form in order to protect the healing process that is taking place inside, and hence pulling a scab before it is ready may prolong the healing period and make the scars visible for a longer time. Drinking plenty of water is a simple and effective remedy to flush out the toxins in the body and keep the skin hydrated. Tannin that is present in tea is a soothing agent and helps in healing as it absorbs ultra-violet light. As such drinking herbal green tea is beneficial. Avoid junk food, oily food and foods rich in cream and sweets.

An effective way to remove acne scars is to apply a paste of fuller’s earth on the face. Fuller’s earth is very rich in mineral content and is a good cleansing agent. After the paste dries thoroughly, you may rinse with water. Buttermilk can also be used to bleach skin discolorations. Rose water mixed with lemon juice is a good cleaning and nourishing agent that helps to remove acne scars. Camphor can also be used to clear spots on the face. Grapes are slightly acidic in nature and hence serve as a bleaching agent. You can also try washing your face with a normal face wash to which a handful of sugar has been added. Scrub gently and after rinsing off, apply lemon juice to the face. It is also a good idea to include mint in your diet as it aids proper digestion and removes toxins from the body.  You may also prepare a paste of sour cream, 1 tbsp of yogurt, 1 tbsp of ground oatmeal and 3-4 drops of lemon juice. Apply this and leave for about 10 minutes and then wash off. This aids in the removal of acne scars.
