Cough syncope symptoms

When someone loses consciousness temporarily during a fit of coughing, the condition is called cough syncope. Syncope or fainting is caused by several conditions including coughing, straining to urinate, having blood drawn, emotional stress, fear or pain. This is not a comprehensive list, however. When experiencing a fainting spell or immediately after patients may become pale and drawn, feel weak, sweaty and nauseated.
Please consult your primary health care giver to rule out any serious disorders that may be causing the problem.
These are some precautions which may help prevent fainting spells:

  1. Sniffing smelling salts or inhaling the vapours from an onion cut in half
  2. Pinching the philtrum when you feel someone may be about to faint. The philtrum is the are between the nose and the upper lip.
  3. Taking deep breaths immediately after a coughing spell
  4. Causing yourself to sneeze as this restores blood flow to the brain in some cases. You can try sniffing on a grain or two of pepper.

And here are some measures to help him with the cough:

  1. Keep a food diary to see if any particular foods seem to be causing the problem and then eliminate them and see if it makes a difference
  2. Try and keep your home free of toxic chemicals and known allergens such as dust mites.
  3. Drink ginger juice with honey after gently warming it. This is a good remedy for soothing an irritated throat.
  4. Gargle with salt water every two hours or so

A healthy diet and moderate exercise will help boost immunity and improve overall health. Also try and see if he can cut down on processed carbs and sugars as these may cause blood sugar to spike and fall sharply making him more prone to fainting.
