Is Lugol's Iodine Effective In Treatment Of Hyperthyroidism?

Iodine deficiency can cause problems with your thyroid gland, and in order to keep your hormonal balance, it is important to consume adequate amounts of iodine. To curb this highly preventable disease, iodine was added to table salt, so that everyone can get the daily recommended values. Yet, iodine deficiency prevails in many parts of the world and continues to be one of the major health conditions facing medical sciences today.

Lugol’s iodine solution is a suboptimal preparation of iodine. There are many reasons why this is considered good for hyperthyroidism:

  • It helps in maintaining a healthy iodine supply to your body in a safe as well as effective manner.
  • The solution has been designed keeping in mind the metabolism rates of different people and the production of thyroid in a normal and healthy person.
  • Lugol’s iodine also fosters normal growth and development of the body as well as proper metabolism of fat, proteins and carbohydrate.
There are two main ways of using Lugol’s iodine. It can be used both internally as well as in external application.
  • Lugol’s iodine can be consumed with water as a drink.
  • You may also use Lugol’s iodine externally by applying it in a square patch on your stomach or your thigh. When the iodine is absorbed into the skin and you see a faded brown stain on your skin, reapply it so that your body continues to get its daily requirement of iodine.
It is best not to use both these methods and to choose either one of them for maintaining good health of your thyroid gland. Over a period of several months, you may reduce the amount of iodine that you are using. However, it is best to check with your doctor about reducing your dosage or giving it up entirely. Only when your doctor allows you to reduce the dose, should you do so.
