Is there a home cure for drowsiness?

Drowsiness is a term used to describe feeling sleepy. On occasion, drowsiness may occur during the day and those affected may fall asleep at the most inappropriate times. This type of abnormal drowsiness that affects people during the day is also termed as 'hypersomnia' or 'somnolence'.

Drowsiness during the day may be attributable to a number of factors. Excessive daytime drowsiness that has no apparent cause is different from fatigue and may be a sign of a sleep disorder. While different emotional states such as depression, anxiety, stress and boredom can all cause daytime drowsiness, they most often cause fatigue and apathy.

The best remedy for drowsiness during the day would be to treat the underlying cause. Daytime drowsiness due to a sleep disorder should be treated by your health care provider. If your healthcare provider has ruled out an underlying sleep disorder then you can take some remedial action at home.

Drowsiness can be the result of a side effect of certain medications. If you are taking any medications, consult your health care provider about whether or not your prescribed medication is the cause. If this is so, request a change in medication. Do not stop taking your medication without consulting your health care provider.

Your drowsiness could be caused by irregular sleeping habits. If this is the case then you should get to sleep early. Changing your sleeping habits can prove to be difficult initially, but persistence will pay off. Exercising regularly and avoiding caffeinated beverages and alcohol after dinner will help you to sleep on time and get the adequate amount of rest. This will help you to go through the day feeling fresh and energetic.

Changing your dietary habits too will help. Eat foods that are low in fat and rich in proteins such as fish, poultry, eggs, low-fat yogurt and cottage cheese. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Avoid eating large portions at one time. Instead, eat smaller portions at frequent intervals.

Splash cold water on your face whenever you feel drowsy. The cold will help to dispel that sleepy feeling. Standing in front of the cold draft from an air conditioner while your face is wet will be even more effective.

Herbal remedies such as ginseng can boost your energy levels and dispel the drowsiness. A cup of tea brewed along with some ginger, cinnamon and honey can also provide an energy boost.

Drowsiness can be many times caused due to monotonous routine. Avoid monotony, try different interesting things and make your life interesting. Develop a hobby, spend your time more in things you are interested.

  • To avoid drowsiness choose low-fat protein foods like fish, lean meats, poultry, egg white, yoghurt or low fat cottage cheese.
  • Avoid carbohydrates like potatoes, muffins, corn, crackers, chips and wafers.
  • Have a good night complete sleep at least for 8 hours at a stretch to feel fit and fresh in the morning and avoid drowsiness.
