My son has dry patchy scalp and its flaky. There are two patches and it round in shape.

An itchy dry, flaky scalp could be due to a number of reasons such as harsh hair products and winter weather. Dry scalp causes hair loss problems as well, and this is one of the reasons you need to find some effective dry scalp remedies. If you are wondering how to get rid of your dry scaly scalp don't worry, simply follow the dry scalp remedies and solutions mentioned below for a quick cure. These dry scalp remedies could be very beneficial to the hair as well, without the worry of major side effects.

  • Massaging your head with herbal oil or olive oil makes for an excellent dry scalp remedy. Take a little herbal or olive oil in a bowl and warm it with the help of your hair dryer. The next step involves massaging your scalp with this warm oil. Use a wide tooth comb to comb your hair and follow this with a short massage once again. The massage helps improve blood circulation, and sebum production is also promoted.
  • Use a natural shampoo to wash your hair. Such shampoos do not contain any sulfates or chemical additives, which in the long run, clog your skin pores and hair follicles, and this in turn, reduces the production of sebum. While buying your shampoos make sure you read the label carefully and check the ingredients.
  • Conditioning your hair with apple cider vinegar is beneficial for an itchy dry scalp. Once you finish rinsing your hair, pour some diluted apple cider directly on your scalp and massage it gently into your scalp. Do not wash the concoction from your hair as it has antibacterial properties, gives your hair a healthy look, and adds moisture to a dry scalp. This diluted apple cider can be made by adding two tablespoons of the vinegar to a cup of water. Another treatment for a dry scalp is the use of aloe vera juice. Apply one teaspoon of this plant to your scalp and leave it on for some time before you could wash it off using a mild shampoo.
  • Make sure you follow a well-balanced diet. A vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids rich diet should be followed so as to moisturize your skin. Sunflower seeds, tomatoes, almonds, and blueberries are some sources of vitamin E. Omega-3 fatty acids rich foods include foods such as dried oregano, broccoli, halibut, strawberries, and flax seeds.
  • If you have a dry flaky scalp, use some yogurt to tackle the problem. Rub some yogurt into your scalp, and leave it on for about 10 minutes or so, and then wash it out from your hair. Alcohol when mixed with certain ingredients can help take care of dry scalp and dandruff problems. Take some rubbing oil (four ounces), some watercress (four ounces), and geranium oil (one teaspoon) and mix well. Keep this mixture aside for a week, and use this regularly while showering till you get rid of the dry flaky skin.
  • Make sure you shampoo your hair in the right way. Shampooing your hair too frequently can strip the natural oils from your hair and make it dry. Also, use a small quantity of shampoo while washing your hair, as too much shampoo will make it difficult for you to wash it off.
  • Excessive heat on the scalp can cause it to dry and add to the flakiness. Avoid taking showers that are too hot. Instead use warm water to wash your hair, and dry it naturally instead of using blow dryers

In addition to treating dry scalp with the solutions and cures mentioned, you can also visit a dermatologist to help you get rid of the problem. He/she will identify the cause of your problem and accordingly prescribe medications. In addition to this, your doctor may prescribe some dandruff shampoo or recommend a shampoo you can buy over-the-counter.
