My daughter is 16 months old, she has a fever a cough and congested nose for almost a month. I need some kind of rememdy to heal this cold, any suggestions?

Fever and cold happens commonly in babies. It’s the body’s natural way to fight infection. This occurs when the virus is present in the air, using clothes, vessels of the affected person. It is contagious and hence precautions need to be done for the baby if any of the family members is suffering from fever and cold. The infection occurs within 2 to 3 days of exposure. The child may have clear, yellowish and greenish discharge from the nose with sneezing and coughing. The child may also have fever with cold.

Certain remedies that can be adopted to reduce fever and cold are:-
  • The baby needs to be hydrated. Breast feed the baby as the child can get the fluids and the required immunity from the breast milk.
  • Honey can be given as it can soothe sore throat and coughs.
  • Lemon balm leaf, chamomile, peppermint can be used to treat fever in babies. If the baby is breastfed, then the mother can have the herbs so that the medicinal properties can be passed to the baby through breast milk.
  • Turn the humidifier on to relieve the congestion and stuffy nose.
  • Prepare chicken broth with garlic. This can be given to babies to treat infections. Garlic has anti bacterial properties and be used to treat fevers.
  • Hand washing the child frequently can avoid the spread of infection. Use hand kerchief while sneezing. Mop the floor with disinfectant to avoid any entry of virus.
However if high fever and chest congestion still persists it is better to consult a doctor.
