There are two measurements noted when recording blood pressure – Systolic and Diastolic. Systolic pressure means the first and highest number recorded. This is the pressure exerted by the heart on the walls of your blood vessels as it pumps with each heartbeat.
Diastolic pressure means the second and lowest number recorded. This is the pressure the blood places on the walls of blood vessels when heart is relaxed between beats. Occasionally high blood pressure due to anxiety, exercise or nervousness may be common. But prolonged untreated high blood pressure can increase risk for heart attack and stroke.
Some factors like age and heredity increase risk for high blood pressure and are beyond our control. We can control other factors like smoking, restrict intake of fatty and salty foods, restrict caffeine and alcohol consumption, regular exercise and lose weight if needed.
