Advice on diet and supplements for emotional disturbances
My friend has heart problem. The symptoms
(Last Updated: Apr 20, 2006)
We all feel emotionally disturbed at times. However, there are many for whom it is a way of life. Due to the changed lifestyle and breakdown of families and institutions like marriage, a lot of people have started to suffer from emotional disturbances and mental disorders that lead to it.
Obesity and a lack of activity, the consumption of highly processed food, anxiety and depression – all make for an unhealthy lifestyle which adds to the mounting health woes in the world. Those of us who suffer from frequent emotional disturbances often have trouble sleeping, increased sensitivity to stress, and depression. A lot of these problems can actually be cured just with a simple change in the diet.
When you are looking to lift your mood, you immediately think of caffeinated beverages or sweet snacks like chocolates and ice creams. They do sound like a great idea but they enter your system and are eliminated so quickly that they leave you feeling worse than before. This fluctuation creates anxiety in your system. Also if you consume these food items before sleeping, they can interfere with your sleep cycle due to their stimulating nature. Ask your friend to include more of whole grains in his diet. The refined or white flour that you eat is stripped of nutrients. The bread that’s made out of it can fill his stomach but will not really nourish him. Whole grains have vital vitamins, minerals and also natural roughage which helps in digestion and bowel movements. In addition, simple carbohydrates are digested easily and are also eliminated from the body very quickly, whereas whole cereals are complex and remain in the body for a longer period of time. Complex carbohydrates also help in the production of serotonin, a chemical which uplifts mood.
Vegetables and fruits are also essential for maintaining a healthy diet. They help regulate blood sugar in addition to providing many of the vitamins and minerals that the body requires. They help prevent mood swings by nourishing the endocrine glands and regulating hormone production. Since your friend suffers severe emotional disturbances, it is recommended that he take at least three servings of vegetables everyday. Fruits are important because they provide natural sugars to the body. These sugars act as fuel to the brain. Raw fruits are also great sources of natural dietary fiber and should be snacked on between meals or whenever your friend wants a mood lift.

Your friend seems to be emotionally disturbed which is why he is experiencing these symptoms. He may not actually have heart disease but to ascertain this, please seek professional help. A psychotherapist will be able to assist him with his fears and a cardiologist to confirm and treat whether he does really have heart disease.
Since your friend seems to be facing a great deal of stress in life, ask him to practice stress management techniques and learn to relax. Stress can worsen his heart problems (if he does have any) or possibly cause heart or other health problems if there is consistent stress and if he doesn’t develop ways to deal with it.
These tips will surely help him:
Regarding food or supplement, it is best to have a balanced diet and make sure he eats wholesome meals. Avoid irregular eating, binge eating, oily or fried foods, snacking on junk foods or using food as a resort to relieve distress. Unless the real thing is identified, it makes no sense taking any supplement.
