Causes grey hair

It is a well-known fact that grey hair is a sign of the ageing process and therefore, it is very common to see people who are in their 50s and above, with grey hair. However, contrary to the popular belief, greying of hair is not always a result of old age. There are several individuals who begin to notice strands of grey hair, when they are in their early 20s and 30s. This occurrence is known as premature greying and it is more common than most of us realize. A few strands of grey hair here and there are usually go unnoticed or are left ignored. However, when it begins to look like there is more salt than pepper in your hair, you are quite likely to sit up and take notice and perhaps even try to identify the reason that you are greying prematurely.

Everyone’s hair is primarily white in color, though it may not appear to be so. There are certain cells in our hair follicles, known as melanocytes, which generate pigments such as melanin. It is these pigments that give the hair its color. The higher the amount of melanin present in the hair, the darker it is going to be. For any reasons, if the melanocytes stop producing the melanin pigment, the hair begins to lose its color, and this is what causes grey hair in most individuals. Some of the most common factors that lead to premature grey hair include heredity, an unhealthy diet, stress, anxiety, the use of harsh hair care products and smoking.

Causes eyebrow greying

It is not uncommon for people to have grey hair in their eyebrows, even when they are in their teens or early 20s. In many instances, the greyness is only restricted to the eyebrows. This means that you can have a grey hair in your eyebrows even if your scalp hair is colored properly. The causes of eyebrow greying are not very different to the causes of greying of scalp hair. This means that you could see greying of eyebrows due to heredity, smoking, a poor diet or lack of adequate water. Stress and anxiety could also lead to hair pigmentation problems in the hair follicles of your eyebrows, which can lead to greying brows.

These factors could reduce the amount of melanin present in the hair, causing it to turn white in color. Over a period of time, the cells that produce melanin die, because of which the production of melanin ceases. Once this happens, the new hair that grows is without the color pigment right from its roots. The color in a grey brow hair cannot be restored in any way. You can choose to pluck the grey hair out if it is just a little bit that you need to get rid of. However, in case you have a lot of greying hair in the eyebrows then plucking is out of the question.

Certain hair color products claim to be safe for not just scalp hair, but also for eyebrow hair. However, most skin care specialists will advise you to refrain from doing so, as the area around the eye area is very sensitive, because of which you could suffer from a severe allergic reaction.

Is grey hair reversal possible?

In case you are looking for gray hair treatment, rest assured that you are not alone. People all over the United States spend hundreds of dollars every year, trying to restore the color to their greying strands. Many hair salons and spas claim to specialize in gray hair treatment for men and women. There are several hair coloring products that are easily available in the markets too, which could include a gray hair treatment shampoo or conditioner. However, it is important to realize that while these products and services help in covering up the discolored strands, they do not actually treat the problem, or even address the factors that are causing it.

Grey hair is not a condition, which can be treated with the help of medication or home remedies. Once your hair turns grey, the color cannot be restored to it in any way. This means that grey hair reversal is not really possible, when it comes to that particular strand of hair.

Rest assured that you do not have to resign yourself to looking at grey hair in the mirror for the rest of your life, just because you have started greying prematurely. While the color cannot be restored naturally to the grey hair, there are several ways in which the strands can be concealed, allowing you to look as young as before. In case it is just a few strands of hair that are causing the problem, you can simply choose to pluck them. The saying about two more strands of grey hair growing in place of one that has been plucked is nothing more than a myth. In case you have a lot of grey hair that you would like to cover up, it may be best for you to visit a hair specialist to explore possibilities like hair dyeing and bleaching.

While gray hair reversal is not really possible there are ways in which you can keep your hair from greying any further.

How to prevent grey hair?

Most people under the age of 40, who see strands of grey hair on their scalp, side locks or even on their eyebrows, usually consult specialists for tips on how to prevent grey hair at young age. First of all, it is important to make sure that you get rid of any unhealthy habits such as smoking or drinking excess alcohol. Studies show that people who smoke are a lot more like to suffer from premature graying, as compared to those who don’t. After that, you may want to look at your diet and make some changes there too. Sweets and other unhealthy food speed up the ageing process, which could cause grey hair, as well as wrinkles. Therefore, it is best for you to follow a health and nutritious diet, which can provide your body the required vitamins for grey hair. Make sure that you follow a diet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, low fat dairy products, nuts and seeds.

Since stress is one of the main causes of premature greying, it may be best for you to try techniques to reduce stress. These include techniques like yoga, meditation, deep breathing and massage therapy. In fact there are a few yoga poses that may be recommended for premature greying. Regular head massages also improve the overall texture of the hair, preventing greying hair problems.

In general, in order to prevent greying hair at a young age, it is best to get an adequate amount of rest, relaxation, sleep and exercise during the day. Leading a healthy lifestyle can help to delay the signs of ageing, which also includes grey hair.
