Cleanse the Colon
What would cleanse the colon?
(Last Updated: Mar 20, 2006)
The colon, or large intestine, is an organ that is situated last in the digestive system. Even though it is situated last, it is by no means any less significant than the other organs that make up the digestive tract. As our lifestyle changes, we inadvertently switch to lifestyles which are unhealthy. To save time from cooking, we rely on foods that are preserved and contain high levels of MSG and other preservatives that could be harmful for our health. Over a period of time, these chemical components of the processed and refined foods start to accumulate along the lining of the organs. Most of the times, this accumulation becomes toxic and causes problems in the digestive system.
The colon is the organ that suffers the most because of this chemical attack. To cleanse the colon, colonic hydrotherapy is usually resorted to. It is a simple surgical procedure, involving a minor surgery, to keep the colon free of toxins and maintain the health of the digestive system.
The colon is a five feet long organ which absorbs the nutrients from the digested food. Since its primary function is to absorb, it can easily absorb toxins too, often becoming a dump for mucus, fecal matter, and toxins that are not able to get excreted out of the body. When people have irregular food habits, their tissues die faster because of lack of nutrition. This dead tissue and cells debris also gets accumulated in the colon too. If there are worms in the body, they too are most likely to be present in the colon. These damaging substances and antigens are often reabsorbed into the blood stream if not excreted properly. Once reabsorbed, these can wreak havoc in the system. This slow accumulation of material in the colon can also interfere with proper bowel movement. Due to all these reasons, it is absolutely imperative that the colon be cleansed after regular intervals.
When these materials start accumulating in the colon, the colon’s ability to absorb the nutrients from the digested food decreases drastically. Since those unabsorbed nutrients are not made available to the body, the body could suffer from various deficiencies. The colon is cleansed by running water through it. The water not only cleans the colon but also stimulates it by gently massaging the muscles in the walls. This stimulation causes contraction of the muscles as a result of which all the accumulated waste is eradicated.

Cleansing the colon or large intestine is an important function to ensure toxins are flushed from the system and normal bowel movements are restored. Toxin build up within the system can cause mild to severe health problems. Consider natural home remedies to detoxify the colon and avoid any health disorder.
Natural laxatives such as prune juice, psylium husks and fiber rich foods are the natural ways to tackle colon problems. Fiber rich foods include whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds and vegetables.
Some high fiber foods include carrots, beetroot, cabbage, peas, apples, brown rice, whole grain breads, whole grain muffins, oat bran, spinach, broccoli, dried fruits like dates and apricots and fresh fruits such as strawberries, blackberries, orange ,apples and pear are good sources of fiber to help ease colon problems. Eating fiber rich foods instead of fiber supplements are a better alternative to resolve colon problems naturally.
Having fruits and vegetables with their skins or the rind is also a good way to include fiber in your diet. Green foods containing high chlorophyll content such as alfalfa, wheatgrass and barley are considered as ideal colon cleansing foods.
Juice fasts or fasting with fruit or vegetable juices only can also prove beneficial in cleansing the system of all toxins. Include fresh fruit juices or vegetable juices throughout the day for a week to detoxify the system. This diet can be continued for another two to three weeks but diabetics must add water to juices to reduce the intake of natural sugars present in fruits.
Drinking lots of water and following a moderate exercise routine can also be beneficial in eliminating colon problems. Insufficient intake of water can increase the levels of toxins in the system, therefore having eight to ten glasses of water every day can help cleanse the colon naturally.
Avoid intake of refined and fatty foods. Meat and meat products should also be consumed moderately to ensure proper bowel movements. Drinking tea or coffee in excess is also avoidable. Tea or coffee consumption can be substituted with herbal teas or fresh fruit juices. It is also advisable to avoid overeating, insufficient chewing or eating in haste; all situations that may lead to colon disorders.
Colon problems are directly associated with dietary habits, frequent use of laxatives, emotional strain or stress or faulty lifestyle habits. Adequate exercise and eating right can resolve mild to moderate colon disorders. Choose any moderate physical and relaxation activity to soothe the nerves and help the system avoid colon problems.
