Both mumps and cold sores are viral infections which are caused by different viruses. Cold sores also known as ‘fever blisters’ are common and very contagious. They are painful hideous mouth sores caused by the herpes simplex virus. When latent herpes simplex virus particles which have been dormant (asleep) in the body become activated, cold sores occur.

It is important to remember to wash your hands often, especially if you have touched your face. Avoid sharing cups and utensils with other people as without proper hygiene this can be very contagious. Most cases of mumps occur in children in the age group of 5 to 14 but slowly young adults are also getting infected. Mumps is caused by a virus which spreads through saliva. It can infect many parts of the body, especially the parotid salivary glands. If your friend has had mumps once before, it is unlikely for him to have a second bout of attack. Other infections can cause the salivary glands to swell and mistakenly assume that your friend has mumps once again.

You can speak to your friend’s physician regarding his proper diagnosis. Your family physician would be able to guide you regarding your query about why your friend is having both mumps and cold sores together.
