What is a coffee enema?

Coffee enemas work on the same principle as other enemas, including saline. In an enema there is a single infusion of a fluid into the bowels, which is allowed to sit in the lower colon for a brief period of time, and then expunged when the person uses the toilet. Instead of the use of a saline solution, a coffee solution is used to stimulate the bowels and create a cleansing, detoxifying effect. A coffee enema has the added effect of caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline. All of these stimulants work directly on the smooth muscles and make them relax, encouraging peristaltic activity.

Coffee enemas are still being studied for their various beneficial and negative effects. Pregnant women and nursing mothers must not take coffee enemas. Caffeine can be a highly addictive substance when taken orally. The same applies to coffee in an enema. People with heart problems, anemia, hemorrhoids, colon surgery, and intestinal tumors should not indulge in these enemas. If you are fasting avoid the use of this method as it can have complications including electrolyte imbalances, heart irregularities and death. If you would like to try this method out keep some basic precautions in mind to avoid the risk of any traumatic side effects. Make sure the coffee is not overly hot; ideally should be at room temperature. Use enema kits that are reliable and single-use only. Use some high-quality lubricant to avoid trauma to the anal area. Do not overindulge and limit yourself to one enema every ten days or so.
