What Are The Causes of Constipation?

Constipation is usually caused by lack of fiber in the diet and it is one of the most frequently occurring digestive diseases.

It may occur during pregnancy or after child birth. A disruption in the routine diet, overuse of laxatives, lack of exercise or even an inappropriate diet may cause constipation. The intestine may be seriously infected due to unhygienic or spicy food and this creates infrequent bowel opening.

Less or irregular sleep may also cause constipation. All these factors create mild constipation but if not treated then serious infection may form some kind of ulcer in the intestine, which can get aggravated later on. A constipated person may regularly be straining with defecation and hurt their anus.

Heavy medication, irritable bowel syndrome and specific diseases also cause constipation.

If the colon absorbs too much water or if its muscle contractions are slow, the stool will also move slowly towards the rectum. There are hard stools which are dry and lumpy in texture which get blocked at the rectum and the elimination becomes difficult. If there is not enough fiber in the diet (available in fruits and vegetables), there is lack of physical activity, there is not enough milk consumption in the body, the urge to eliminate stool is either ignored or if there is any problem with regular intestinal functions, then there are high chances of developing constipation.

If a person had been on high doses of antibiotics or other medication, then this can also create constipation. To counteract this, one must drink lots of water. Water consumption can prevent dehydration though it may not necessarily cure constipation.

Aging, traveling or any kind of disturbance in regular food intake causes constipation. Stroke is one specific disease which causes digestive disorders. Stress is becoming an important cause of constipation.

It is best to follow proper daily routine and maintain a healthy diet.

Everybody has a different body system and its functions. Individual food patterns are developed according to our tastes, nature and culture. Our lifestyles and the problems associated with them are also determined by these factors. So, we must realize our requirements and limitations and work around them to prevent diseases from attacking us.
