Misconceptions About Yoga

Yoga is the fine art of spiritual and mental development though its approach towards physical development is scientific.



In various parts of the world, yoga is taken seriously as part of one's life but in several others, the connotation of the word still assails people's minds with misconceptions. They associate it with meticulous yoga poses which are performed to attain certain kind of physical perfection. While various other people take it to be related heavily with mysticism and delving into Hindu religion and the culture of India.



The most common of the yoga myths is that it is the study of ancient Hindu scriptures and traditions. It is true that yoga originated in India and the postures were formed by yogis and sages but it is suitable for every individual as it lays stress on refinement of the spirit which cannot be confined to a religion or a culture.

Yoga beginners sometimes take it as an alternative form of casual sports and practice it as a pastime.



The poses in yoga are a means to attain the ultimate goal of personal development. Yoga exercises are based on the moral aspects of human behavior and thoughts. The principles of yoga are based on the teachings of non violence, love for all, non stealing, purity of mind and a heart full of consciousness.



It advocates selflessness and teaches the finer aspects of harmonious living.

In some parts of the world, people believe that yoga exercises are only meant for women. There exist various postures in yoga for women according to their present need but that is a part of yoga postures. As it is women who go through such intense cycles of menstruation, pregnancy, breast feeding and menopause, that to regulate their hormone levels and to restore their health after child birth, only they should practice yoga.



In many parts of the world, women are still the regular yoga practitioners and teachers despite the fact that history of yoga tells us about yogis and famous instructors who were all men. It is also incorrectly believed that all the yoga postures have to be performed by all individuals. Some people are also of the view that one has to be in perfect form and health to perform the postures whereas the truth is that with regular yoga practice, agility can be achieved by any individual.



Also, the fact that outdoor yoga is the best way to exercise is not always true. At times, this can be beneficial but depending on the temperature and weather, one has to take decision. In fact, yoga can be performed in a better way indoors where the temperature is normal. The yoga myth of burning incense sticks while practicing is incorrect as inhaling any kind of smoke while meditating or performing postures may cause allergy and/or suffocation. Burning incense before yoga practice creates a soothing ambience and calms the senses while we are meditating.
