Natural Vitamin B 6

Vitamin B 6 is a vital water soluble vitamin naturally found in various fortified food sources.



The most common natural sources include cereals, meat, wheat germ, whole grain, molasses, brewer’s yeast, poultry, fish, green leafy vegetables, brown rice, green peas and fruits. Pyridoxine, pyridoxal and pyridoxamine are three chemical forms, out of which pyridoxine is most active.





Natural Vitamin B6 is most essential for metabolizing amino acids and fatty acids. It also plays a key role in regulating normal functions of nervous and immune system, protein metabolism, formation of red blood cells, oxygen transportation and conversion of tryptophan to niacin.



It also helps to lower down the homocysteine level that eventually reduces the risk of heart ailments.

Synthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine are also affected by the consumption of Vitamin B6. In case of adequate intake, the transmitters function normally to regulate nerve cell communication and a deficient amount can hamper the functions of these transmitters, resulting in memory loss or even brain damage.





Recommended dietary allowances for children between the age of 6 months to 13 years is about 0.1gm to 1 gm/day and for adults 1.2gm per day. Pregnant and lactating mothers need more of Vitamin B6.



They need almost a dietary intake of 1.9-2gm per day.

Deficiency of natural Vitamin B 6 often results in reduced brain activity, abnormal nerve functions, anemia, vomiting, tingling hands, depression and ulcers. The deficiency can be curbed by incorporating the right amount of Vitamin B6 natural sources in the daily diet.





Inadequate diet causes deficiency of Vitamin B6 and an overdose results in toxicity of B6. Toxic level of Vitamin B6 if consumed through natural sources or whole food supplements, there are symptoms for toxicity. But, high doses of B6 supplements can cause pain and numbness in the feet and legs.

Overdose should be taken only if consult by a doctor, many doctors prescribe a high dose of this vitamin to treat the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome and nerve damage.
