Group Therapy

Group therapy was never initially thought of as group therapy.

It started at a time where psychiatrists were less as compared to the number of patients required them. Therapists then found out that when people met others who had gone through similar circumstances, they knew they were not alone. This feeling gave them a new lease of life and reason to look forward to new twists in life.

Group therapy includes coming together of people with same problems, in presence of a psychologist, so that they can discuss their experiences and problems and find solutions themselves. There are different types of group therapies; one type has the group sessions going out for a long period of time, though they are allowed to meet only for limited number of hours during the week. Another type of group therapy is allowed a limited number of sessions; but there are no restrictions or time limits for this type of group therapy.

Another method of classification in case of group therapy is that groups made on basis of their problems and there are also heterogeneous groups where each person has a different problem. After group formation, the psychologist allows a group to open and carry on discussion among them and finds out how each person has evolved through the time. Listening to other people’s experiences can be healing in it’s own way.

Group therapy is a boon for people who do not have very complex problems.

Most of the times, simple sharing of problems benefits them and they are able to sort out problems on their own. However, you cannot provide therapy to all those with more complex problems in group therapy.

Group therapy is not beneficial for people with complex problems, since most of the times such people are not ready to accept that they have problems.

Some times some people might not go in for group therapy for the reason that they do not want to participate on groups. These people might want separate sessions with the psychologist.

Group therapy is a cheaper option that a single therapy therefore, all those who cannot afford single sessions can get help for them through group therapy. Group therapy saves time and money for all involved.

Group therapy also has another advantage, it helps people meet each other and trust each other to the extent of sharing problems with each other. Sharing and participating are two important factors, which help vent bottled-up emotions and therefore there are less chances of these people requiring psychiatrist’s help in future. However, for people with serious problems, group therapy does not work.
