PMS

Pre- Menstrual syndromes or Pre- menstrual tension, is a syndrome that occurs in menstruating women from 20-35 years of age.



This is a very disturbing syndrome, which often has the ability to interfere between normal functioning and day to day life of a woman before starting of her menses.

The premenstrual syndrome has been defines as a collection of physical, physiological and emotional symptoms, related to a woman’s menstrual cycle. Depending on person to person, these symptoms can disappear once the bleeding has begun, in some cases however, these symptoms stay on until the bleeding has begun maybe until it actually finishes.

These symptoms start almost two weeks before start of menstruation, sometimes it might begin before a week, there are up to 150 symptoms identified by doctors.



All women do not suffer from all types of symptoms. Most women suffer from common pms symptoms like weight gain due to water retention, abdominal bloating, insomnia, depression, crying bouts, anger, stress, anxiety, headache, fatigue, acne, etc. Severity of these symptoms depends on person to person.



In case of some women the symptoms are so severe that they require staying at home and refraining from any socializing.

Menstrual problems like the PMS can be cured, there are several medications as well as therapies that have been suggested. Some of these are controlling diet and reducing intake of substances like caffeine tea, sugar, etc.



Aerobics exercises too have been found extremely fruitful in case of reducing PMS symptoms. Counseling also seems to have helped people suffering from this menstrual problem.

In case of women suffering from acute PMS, taking calcium, Progesterone, Vitamin E, Vitamin B6 supplements, has also proven to be quite successful.



Though PMS is suffered by a number of women, there is no scientific base yet formed for this syndrome, scientists suggest that this might be a socially constructed disorder, therefore there has not been much evidence found on this disorder.

PMS can be avoided if the woman continues on a healthy diet, it is necessary that the diet is fiber rich and nutritive, any loss of nutrients too might result in PMS. Along with good diet it is also necessary to maintain a good exercise routine, aerobics, yoga, etc.
