People with borderline personality disorder (BPD) lead highly disturbed lives. Their moods and relationships are unstable and have a very poor self-image. These people are highly sensitive to environmental circumstances. These people often feel empty and are at great risk of suicide.
They tend to have uncontrolled relationship due to which they frequently engage in suicidal or self mutilative behaviors like cutting or burning. They experience anger or fear if even separated for some reason or even if there are changes in any plan. For example ,if someone important to them gets late or cancels the appointment ,they get angry or feel intense sadness because they feel they are bad to those people. These individuals have sudden and drastic viewpoint of others.
These individuals empathize with other people with an expectation that they will always be available to them whenever required. Their goals,aspirations,self-image are also sudden and change drastically. People with this disorder are often very intense going from anger to deep depression. They generally tend to have other associated disorders such as bipolar disorder, bulimia, depression and substance use disorder. Psychological influence is the core cause of this disorder.
Early trauma, especially sexual and physical abuse lead to borderline personality disorder(BPD).The personality and a stressful event ,too, cause the unstable behavior. Borderline personality disorder is mostly seen in females as compared to males. Biological influence ,too. Have a direct impact on BPD victims.
Family history of mood disorder or impulsivity can also lead to BPD.Rapid cultural changes ( Such as immigration),relationship problem or early trauma can also lead to BPD. These socio-cultural influences make an individual to develop BPD. Many people with BPD respond positively to a variety of medications. Antidepressants are generally prescribed in treating mood instability. Psychological treatment approach help the patients to deal effectively with their future lives.
Treatment like Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), which involves helping people to cope with stress is an effective treatment approach. Also patients are taught to identify and regulate their emotions. Problem solving is emphasized so that they can handle difficult situations effectively. In other treatment BPD patients are helped to reexperience the traumatic event to help extinguish the fear associated with them. DBT help to reduce suicide attempts, drop-out from treatment and hospitalization. The focus of treatment is top help patients adjust themselves socially and emotionally. |
