Surgical Treatment

When one hears of surgery patients cringed.  Surgical treatment would mean the disease could either be serious or 50/50.  But there are minimally invasive surgical treatment being practiced today.  Surgical treatment most applicable into treating kidney stones which cannot be done by conventional method.  Kidney stones can either be traditionally treated or appropriate and suitable treatment is based on the type of stone and cause accordingly.  Kidney stones that cannot pass on their own within 30 days or which may cause bleeding which can damage the kidneys may need surgical treatment.  Even on going urinary tract infections may also pass surgery.   Urologists have several options to choose from to break up, to remove or bypass kidney stones.  One of the procedures used by urologists is called ureteroscopy.  An ureteroscope is inserted through the urethra down to the bladder to get to the stone.  The stone then is removed or broken up into tiny pieces.  The procedure, ureteroscopy, is carried out subject to local or general anesthesia.  Whenever a stone settles in the ureter the urologist may recommend ureteroscopy.

Lithotripsy is another kind of procedure which is not for patients with large kidney stones or has another medical condition.  The treatment uses shock wave to break up the kidney stones into tiny fragments.  Lithotripsy is a painful procedure so it is executed under local or general anesthesia.  Otherwise a sedative is a good alternative.  It is possible that through lithotripsy the stones can be totally eradicated in one treatment.  This is so because the machines used to conduct shock waves through water produce powerful waves.  Lithotripsy is the latest procedure to take away kidney stones.  Lithotripsy is a type of treatment that is non-surgical.  The treatment takes about 45 to 60 minutes.  This simple procedure of removing kidney stones is performed by an urologist.

In medical parlance, lithotripsy and ureteroscopy are called minimally invasive surgery.  The surgical treatment does not make use of the normally large cut to allow access to the internal organs.  While there is the benefits of open surgery, pain reduction is done at the minimal and the patient can go back to normal activities as soon a possible.  But as mentioned before, not all patients can undergo this kind of surgical treatment.  Each patient warrants personal assessment and deliberation.

While surgeons perform surgical treatments which are appropriate for kidney stones that are defiant to traditional treatment.

Surgery is advisable also when kidney stones are exceptionally large and tending to obstruct.

And surgery is also for patients with physical abnormalities of the urinary tract that would make impossible the passage of even small stones.  Kidney stone disease needs to be diagnosed clearly and truthfully.  Because knowing what types of problems they may cause can be easy consideration for non-surgical or surgical treatment.
