Cervical Cancer

Malignancy of the cervix means cervical cancer.

This cancer is malignant and often difficult to detect, most of the times detection of this cancer is done when it reaches its advanced stage.

There are several cervical cancer symptoms associated with this cancer, excessive vaginal bleeding is one of them, there can be symptoms like contact bleeding or release of vaginal mass, but these are not the symptoms in all cases of cervical cancer. The patient might experience some pain in the abdomen at the time of sexual intercourse; the patient might also loss of appetite, weight loss, swollen legs, leg pain, leakage of urine from the vagina, etc.

Most of the cervical cancer cases have been identified to have been caused due to infection of human papillomavirus, or HPV which happens to be the single largest cause of cervical cancer.  There are also other causes like diet, smoking, and use of oral contraceptives, HIV infection and a family history of cervical cancer.

In order to diagnose the cervical cancer, most common test is the Pap smear test which includes effective screening so that presence or pre-presence of cervical cancer can be confirmed. Another method to identify cervical cancer is to carry out a biopsy of the cancer.

There are several more procedures like LEEP etc. used to identify the cervical cancer.

One of the most common treatments for cervical cancer is hysterectomy, which includes removal of uterus along with part of vagina. There is a requirement of specialist doctors for doing this operation; such doctors are not available in abundance.

Therefore, there is no guarantee that the cervical cancer will be completely removed once the surgery is performed, because this cancer is extremely difficult to identify and remove. There are new techniques which allow the operation to be done through vagina instead of abdomen.

There have also been drugs which have been made to treat patients of cervical cancer who are in advanced stage.

There is cervical cancer vaccine which is aimed to cure cervical cancer. Cervical cancer too can be metastasized to other parts of the body, like to stomach, abdomen, lungs, etc.

Though, women with human papillomavirus have been identified as most likely to get this cancer that does not mean that all women with this virus will end up with the cancer.

It depends on the general health of the patient. Patient with cervical cancer should follow the instructions of doctor so that it can be cured.
