Cancer Treatment |
Cancer TreatmentCancer treatment is done to cure cancer and to extend and improve the quality of life.
The main goals of cancer treatment are to treat cancer symptoms (if at all it is not possible to cure cancer), kill or remove the cancer cells (with the help of chemotherapy, radio therapy or surgery) and to prevent the cancer from coming back. The type of treatment a person will receive will depend on the type of cancer, location of the tumor and aggressiveness or stage of the disease. If a tumor can shrink with the help of radiation therapy then surgery will not be the first option.
Depending on the type of cancer a person will receive a single treatment or combination of treatments. ‘Investigational treatment’ is the term often used by a specialist, which means that the safety and effectiveness of a particular treatment in treating cancer is being studied in a clinical trial. Cancer treatment can be done with –
- Surgery – Many specialists consider surgery as a first step in cancer treatment as it can be used to diagnose as well as treat cancer.
Surgery is used to remove the tumor altogether or to reduce the size of a large tumor, so other therapies like radiation therapy or chemotherapy are more effective. Surgery is the treatment that is enough to treat the cancer alone. Some times it is also combined with chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
Surgery may also be recommended to reduce pain or other related symptoms. - Cancer drugs- Cancer drugs include hormone therapy, chemotherapy or biological/genetic treatments that are used to destroy cancerous cells in the body. When the possibility of curing cancer are low, cancer drugs are administered that will help to prolong and improve the quality of life. Cancer drugs can be injected or taken in the intravenous, oral or tropical form.
- Chemotherapy – Chemotherapy uses drugs to avoid cancer from spreading, and also to avoid it’s reoccurrence once it’s treated. It is generally used for the treatment of blood cancer, bone marrow cancer or cancer of the lymphatic system.
- Hormone therapy - Drugs are used that interfere with the hormone production or action, to slow down and kill the growth of cancer cells.
- Radiation therapy – Uses high energy rays to shrink or kill the tumor.
The normal cells that are affected in the process recover in a better way than the cancerous cells. - Alternative therapy – Some alternative therapies are also used, like herbal products might be used in moderation for a short period of time or the patient is given a counseling session on how to deal or cope with cancer.
With the help of a specialist, it is important for a person with cancer to choose the correct therapy for the cancer treatment.
