Milk Allergy

Milk allergy can also be termed as milk protein allergy, since allergy is triggered due to our body’s immune system triggers this reaction against proteins in milk.



Milk allergy is not caused by plain milk; milk allergy can be caused by all diary products that contain milk protein.

Each person might have different types of symptoms. Symptoms can range from mere gases, to abdominal cramps or diarrhea. Milk allergy can be respiratory; this can result into wheezing, vomiting, distress, etc.

Gastro-intestinal milk allergy can result in abdominal cramps.



For some it might result into gases that will generally stop after milk is digested. People getting abdominal cramps can also get diarrhea after cramps. Whereas some people might not get cramps at all, milk allergy will result directly in diarrhea. Another type of gastrointestinal milk allergy is constipation because of consumption of milk.





Milk allergy can be dermatological. Many a times milk allergy might result into atopic dermatitis, skin rash, hives, etc. People suffering from milk allergy might also be allergic to high protein food like the beef.

Milk allergy symptoms can start anytime between 20 minutes to two hours of consumption of milk products.



Sometimes allergies can also start after some days of milk products consumption. This allergy can start off as cramps or itching or gases depending on each individual. However, it the allergy is severe then it would be better to find a prophylaxis for this allergy.

People suffering from milk allergy are generally fed with rice milk, which suits a lot of people and does not have any allergic reactions. However, rice milk is not favored for infants.



Milk is an excellent food, it is naturally rich in calcium, therefore most advisable for consumption for lactating mothers, women and children.

Some infants may be allergic to milk and milk products in first couple of years of their lives, 90% of infants lose their allergic reactions to milk after they reach 3 years of age. Therefore, milk can be introduced again after age 3 if infant was allergic to milk earlier.

Milk allergy should not be confused with lactose intolerance, though symptoms might be similar, occurrence is because of completely different reasons.



People allergic to plain milk should try healthier combinations like the yogurt, cheese, etc. to fulfill their dietary needs. Milk is an important health food; people with osteoporosis should take milk after taking necessary medication to avoid milk allergies.
