Eczema Treatment

It is wise to visit a dermatologist immediately if you experience any symptoms of eczema.

Before making a conclusion, for exact diagnosis the specialist is likely to ascertain a number of things besides physically examining you. Details like family history, lifestyle, dietary habits, allergic tendencies, drug intake, chemical or material exposed at work or home would be taken. Blood test for the level of antibodies might also be done.

Skin patch testing, a special test to detect eczema may be performed, where the suspected irritant is applied on the skin and left there for 24 hours, after removing the patch if the skin is swollen, itching and red then the results are considered positive. Occasionally skin biopsy may also be done for diagnosis of eczema.

Treatment of eczema can be often slow and not always completely effective.

Eczema or eczematous dermatitis is not an infectious disease, but don’t expect overnight results as eczema is difficult to cure completely, but easier to control.
  1. First thumb rule for eczema treatment is to avoid scratching, although it is difficult to resist. A starched skin is difficult to heal and bacteria can get in through the cracks easily, causing infection.
  2. As eczema is mainly related to dry and itchy skin, the most common treatment a specialist would suggest is application of creams and ointments that contains corticosteroids and anti-histamines (pills) to keep the skin moist as far as possible. Your specialist may also prescribe other medications which are to be taken in the pill form if the eczema is too severe.

Take all the medications on time and avoid stress completely.
  3. Ultraviolet light therapy is sometimes used to clear eczema in some cases.
  4. It is wise to avoid the substances that stress your skin and trigger an allergic reaction, for example if you are allergic to soy or fish then avoid them completely to avoid the symptoms.
  5. Avoid too much exposure to warm water as it can dry your skin soon.

Cold compressed can be applied on the itchy skin to reduce the itchiness.
  6. Wear soft and comfortable cotton clothing (undergarments too) and avoid the clothes that irritate your skin.
  7. Along with mental and emotional stress, avoid strenuous physical activities as sweating can trigger the onset of the symptoms.
  8. Sudden temperature and humidity changes should also be avoided.
  9. Especially take care of children with eczema as they are vulnerable and tend to scratch even unknowingly. Keep their skin moisturized on regular basis and avoid any triggers that flairs up the symptoms.

The severity of eczema in many people generally reduces after the age of 25 years. Learn to tune in to the triggers which cause allergic reactions and avoid them as far as possible. Don’t let it affect your social or personal life. Live your life with high self esteem.
