What Causes Allergies?Hive Hives (urticaria) is one of the most common types of skin allergies.
It is totally harmless and usually appears as rashes all over the skin. The hives are variedly sized, prickly and circular inflammations, which appear in clusters. These are commonly seen in throat, arms, legs, and trunk and last for about 24 hours.

Hives can be caused by medication such as penicillin, sulfa, anticonvulsant drugs, phenobarbital, and aspirin among others; food stuffs like shellfish, nuts, chocolate, and berries; insect bites and bee stings; cat dander; or pollen. Other causes of hives include: emotional stress, hepatitis B, parasitic worms, food additives, plants, cold temperatures, heat, sweating, and bacterial - viral - fungal infections. However, in many cases the exact allergen, responsible for the cause remains unknown.
Anaphylaxis is one of the serious allergic reactions that appears all of a sudden and could be fatal, at times. Its common causes include food, medication, insect stings and latex. Food allergy is believed to be the most important cause of anaphylaxis resulting in over 30,000 emergency hospital visits, each year in the U.S.
Food allergy could be caused by triggers like shellfish, soy, and chocolate among others. Idiopathic anaphylaxis where no particular reason could be found or Food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis are some other types.
Persons who have a previous history of anaphylactic reactions have a higher chance for subsequent attacks. Family history of allergic conditions is yet another trigger of anaphylactic shocks.
Individuals who have asthma in addition to food allergies may be at increased risk for having a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction to food.
Anaphylactic shock is a serious, whole-body allergic reaction where the person's immune system becomes sensitized to that allergen. Anaphylactic shock might cause labored breathing, abdominal pain, cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Serious and prolonged Anaphylactic shocks might result in heart arrhythmias, which demands timely medication as the situation is life threatening.
There are a number of triggers that set off allergy and the best possible caution would be to identify your allergen and keep away from it.
