ADHD MedicationThere are different types of medications that can be taken for ADHD, each depend on the type of symptoms shown by the patients, where some might be given stimulants there are chances some others are give suppressants instead of stimulants in case the patient is over aggressive.
However, most commonly adhd medicines comprise of psychostimulants which include drugs like the methylphenidate, dextroamphetamine, etc.
Like any other medicine, these medicines too have their own side effects; these side effects include weight loss due to decreased appetite, there are also other side effects like insomnia, headaches, stomach aches, etc.
Intensity of these side effects can be avoided or removed totally. This can be done by reporting all side effects you may experience while taking these medicines.
The doctor will then prescribe to you the exact dosage depending on your side effects; you are required to take the exact dosage no more no less.
There are also some other ways you can avoid side effects of these medicines, these are trying two days out of a week as drug free days, however, this should not be your decision alone, your doctor should give you a go ahead before this is done.
People suffering from stomach upsets should try to take medicines with lunch or during meals this will reduce their stomach ache and medicines will be absorbed better.
If your child is losing weight because of ADHD, then it is suggested that you give your child some healthy snacks during the day, this will help your child retain proper weight.
You can also make sure that your child eats atleast three meals a day so that weight loss does not cause any other problems.
There are different types of ADHD medicines that you can take, one form of medicines has short term effects, the effect might last only for some hours after the medicine has been taken, whereas another form, is the long lasting medicines which require to be taken just once or twice during the day, these are ideal for those who cannot take medicines during any other time of the day like small children who cannot take medicines inside school, or who require parental assistance while taking medicines.
Medication is required to be taken generally for a couple of years, for people with severe ADHD medication can run into some more years till all the symptoms have been completely eliminated and the person is his normal self again. |
