Acute Renal Failure Risks

Your kidneys are made up with nephrons, which are composed of capillary blood vessels and small tubes.

These capillaries are responsible for filtering the fluid that comes from your blood flow. This filtered material contains waste substances and vital body substances, like calcium and sugar. After filtration, both of these substances are passed to the small tubules.

From here, the waste materials (uric acid or creatinine) are released to the urine. On the other hand, the substances, which are needed by the body (amino acids, sugar and calcium), are absorbed back to the bloodstream.

When there is a disruption with this function, you will develop acute kidney failure.

This disease, which is caused by other medical problems, can be damaging to the structure of your kidneys. The causes are classified according to the location of the problem, and how it is affecting the body. The three categories are postrenal, renal and prerenal.

Acute renal failure usually develops due to underlying medical conditions. As a matter of fact, patients who have already been admitted to the hospital for other ailments have been diagnosed with this.

The risk of acute renal failure is high when you suffer from extreme burns or injuries.

You are also likely to be affected with this when you have undergone a complicated surgical procedure. On the other hand, the risk is even more heightened when you are an excessive drinker, when you abuse drugs or have been taking in pain medications for a long time. These medications may include Tylenol, aspirin, Advil or Motrin.

An individual who is on antibiotic medication (gentamicin or streptomycin), due to severe infection, has the tendency to develop this health problem.

When your body is always exposed to toxins, you become more vulnerable to acute renal failure. On the other hand, x-ray exams which utilize contrast dyes for outlining the blood vessels are considered as among the factors that increase kidney failure. This is common in individuals who have been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a disease which is related to diabetes. Multiple myeloma is a cancer type which affects the plasma cells.

There are a lot of medical problems which increase the risk of acute kidney failure. Some of these diseases may be due to other conditions, while some are due to genetic makeup:
  1. diabetes
  2. chronic infection
  3. heart failure
  4. high blood pressure
  5. kidney disease
  6. blood disorders
  7. lupus, and other immune disorders
  8. liver disease
  9. obstruction to the bladder outlet
  10. enlargement to the prostate gland
