Hearing Protection Tips

Exposure to loud noises is one of the commonest causes of hearing loss in today's times.



Prolonged exposure to noises louder than 85 decibels can have strong negative impact on your hearing ability.  People working with noise producing tools are at high risk.  Noisy tools and machinery such as power driven lawn movers, tractors and hand drills produce noise in the range of 90-98 decibels.  Regular exposure (even for a very short duration) to bulldozers, chain saws, ambulance sirens or jet engine takeoffs is risky.  The above mentioned objects produce sounds in range of 105-140 decibels.  Apart from noisy tools and noisy environments, portable music available today is also responsible for high noise levels.  I-pods and MP3 players are capable of producing sounds in the range of 130 decibels.

We need to take extra care to protect our hearing today more than ever before.  Some of the things that you can do to protect your hearing are -
  1. Make it a habit to wear hearing protection in noisy environments.   Whether it is earplugs or earmuffs, the device should be airtight.  Wearing hearing protection around loud noises helps protect your ears and hearing in the long run.
  2. Ensure that your ears are covered properly using a hat or ear muffs when out in the cold, rain or wind.



     
  3. Beware of noise - Take care to lower the volume on radios, TV or speakers whenever possible.
  4. Careful use of headphones is advised; beware of hearing loud music using headphones.
  5. Alternate noisy and quieter activities during the day whenever possible.
  6. Be sure you use adequate protective gear for your head as well as ears while playing sports such as ice hockey, rugby, football, hunting, boxing or fencing.
Whatever the type of hearing protection device you may choose to use, make sure they fit you well as otherwise it will be a futile exercise.
