Children's Hearing Protection

We tend to take things like good health for granted most of the times, so is the case with hearing ability.

It is important to realize the fact that hearing loss can occur even later in life.

Hearing loss could be due to genetic defects, illness or injury.

Children run the risk of suffering from permanent hearing loss as a result of head injuries, childhood infections such as meningitis, measles or chickenpox. Ear infections such as Otitis Media are a common cause for temporary hearing loss.

While genetic defects and illnesses are not under our control, you can do a lot when it comes to protection from injuries and to an extent preventing infections.

Here are a few suggestions to take care of ears and protection of the hearing ability -
  1. Hygiene is important.

Ensure your child's ears are cleaned properly. Make sure their ears are covered and protected from wind, rain and snow.

  2. Wearing ear muffs and hats is recommended when outdoors in inclement weather.
  3. Protection from extremely loud and constant noises is vital.

Use ear plugs to protect their ears from loud noises and in environments where they will be exposed to it. Gunshots, firecrackers, chainsaws and lawn mowers are a few examples of such noises, where use of ear plugs will help in protecting the ear.
  4. Explain the importance of protecting their ears and hearing to your children.

It is important they understand how injuries can result in hearing loss.
  5. Ensure they wear protective gear while playing contact sports such as football, boxing, fencing, ice hockey, rugby or any other such sports.
  6. Make sure no foreign object is inserted into the child's ears.
  7. Keep the volume on the radio, stereo, TV and especially the headphones turned down.
  8. Get in touch with your family physician immediately if you suspect anything wrong with your child's hearing.
  9. Having your child's hearing tested on a regular basis on the recommendation of your physician or audiologist is a good idea.
