Home Remedies for Whooping Cough

Whooping cough or Pertussis is a highly contagious disease caused by bacteria.



It begins with a mild cold and cough that escalates into severe coughing spells that end with a whoop sound. Now, babies are vaccinated early against this disease. A doctor should be contacted immediately at signs of this disease. Meanwhile, whooping cough home remedies are of help.

Whooping Cough Home Remedies:  

 

  • Garlic: A teaspoon to which five drops of garlic juice are added should be given to the patient three times a day.



    The frequency of this dosage can be increased, if the coughing is frequent and distressing. Garlic helps dissolve accumulated mucus from the lungs.
  • Ginger with honey: Another effective whooping cough remedy is ginger with honey. Ginger removes mucus from the throat. Give the patient a teaspoon of fresh ginger juice mixed with honey in equal quantities at frequent intervals.
  • Ginger with fenugreek seeds: Boil 250 ml.



    of water with 1 teaspoon of fenugreek seeds. When the decoction is reduced to half, add a few drops of honey and 1 teaspoon of ginger juice. This is a powerful expectorant.
  • Turmeric: In a small cup of warm milk, add a teaspoon of fresh turmeric powder and mix well. Add some honey.



    Sip this slowly to soothe the throat. Drink this more than an hour before or after a meal.
  • Honey with onion: Combine the juice of an onion with a teaspoon of honey. Onion juice kills bacteria while honey helps dissolve mucus and also soothes the throat. Drink this twice in a day.



    It is one of the best whooping cough remedies.
  • Honey with radish: Add one teaspoon of honey to one teaspoon of radish juice and a pinch of rock salt. Salt is anti-bacterial and radish juice is decongestive and anti-toxin. Give this syrup to the patient twice a day.
  • Honey with basil: Give the juice of a few basil leaves added to a teaspoon of honey. This is especially easy to give to babies.



    Basil is an expectorant.
  • Almond oil: Take five drops of almond oil .Mix with ten drops each of ginger juice and white onion juice, and have this three times a day. Almond oil stops muscle spasms and prevents frequent coughs.
  • Aniseed: Aniseed has curative properties. You can add aniseed to tea and give the patient.
  • Grapes: Grapes act as an expectorant and hence helps in whooping cough.

A few drops of eucalyptus oil rubbed on the patient’s chest gives relief. Cold packs over the throat and chest may also provide relief.

Along with these whooping cough natural remedies, rest the patient in a clean and quiet room and make sure he drinks plenty of water.
