Psoriasis Home Remedies Psoriasis is a skin disorder involving the appearance of inflamed, scaly patches of skin.
It is basically a chronic, autoimmune disease, and in some cases the joints are affected along with the skin. This inflammation of the joints is known as psoriatic arthritis, and affects about a tenth of all psoriasis patients. Beyond these basic features of psoriasis however, there is a great deal of variation in the causes of psoriasis, the efficacy of treatments, the severity of the symptoms, and even the symptoms themselves.
Sometimes, the scaliness may not occur, and the inflamed skin may be smooth. In some cases, tiny blisters may appear, while in others, the nails of the fingers and toes may be affected. Treatment often depends upon the type and severity of the condition, and no single treatment can be recommended in every case.
Home remedies for psoriasis mainly aim at soothing the skin and reducing the symptoms, but you should simultaneously explore your medical options - these home remedies should not be used as a substitute for medical treatment. Moisturizing the skin is often a big help in reducing both itching and scaling of skin and to some extent even the inflammation. You should use a thick moisturizing cream, possibly even petroleum jelly or aqueous cream, as these work much better than regular moisturizing lotions, which are thin and suitable only for regular use on healthy skin.
Remember that the moisturizer should be applied soon after bathing, when your skin has already absorbed moisture. To maximize absorption of moisture, you should try soaking your entire body in the bathtub for a few minutes. This will also help soften and remove the scaly, flaking skin.
You should also make sure that you use mild soaps when bathing, and even otherwise. Many soaps are too harsh for sensitive skin; instead, use a mild, fatty soap, or a glycerin soap.
For many people, allergies tend to worsen the symptoms of psoriasis.
You should therefore visit an allergy specialist, who will perform a test to identify all your allergies. You can try to identify your allergies on your own, but this is very difficult, because some work very subtly. Once your allergies have been identified, you have the option of treating them, but complete avoidance of allergens is the best course of action.
Finally, you can try using home remedies such as garlic oil and warm olive oil on a regular basis. Adding Epsom salts or a couple of tablespoons of vinegar to your bathwater is also supposed to help. |
