Yellow eyes usually mean jaundice, which is a liver disorder. Jaundice is not a disease but rather a symptom that can occur due to many other diseases. Jaundice is actually yellowing of the skin and eyes which is the result of a high level of the chemical bilirubin in the blood. The yellowness will depend on the level of bilirubin in the blood.
The liver has many functions in the body. One of the primary functions is to produce and secrete bile into the intestine. This bile helps digest dietary fat. Jaundice occurs when there is too much bilirubin produced for the liver to remove, there is a defect in the liver which restricts its ability to remove bilirubin from the blood, or there is a blockage in the bile duct which reduces the flow of bile or bilirubin from liver to the intestines.
Jaundice could cause the skin and eyes to turn yellow. The urine may turn dark or brownish in color. This usually happens when bilirubin which is in excess in the blood is removed through urine from the body. It can also cause itchiness on the body. If the patient has jaundice, he or she may also have symptoms of other liver disease or cirrhosis. Blockage of the bile duct would also result in a deficiency of vitamins as essential vitamins cannot reach the intestine due to this blockage. Increased production of bilirubin, inflammation in the liver, chronic liver disease, and genetic disorders are a few causes of jaundice.
Jaundice or yellow eyes as it is commonly known, can be treated if the exact cause is known. The jaundice patient has to follow a strict regimen of diet along with the prescribed medication. The diet has to be strictly followed till the time the liver functions properly. A proper diet, healthy lifestyle, and moderate exercise can definitely help to speed up the recovery. You should drink plenty of water with lemon juice as this also helps in treating yellow eyes.
