vaginal odor

Vaginal odor is natural in the case of every woman. A vagina that is healthy has a discrete odor that is normal. If you find that there is a recent change in smell it may not necessarily be due to an infection. The change in smell might be due the fact that you are at a special time of your monthly period. However, if there is a change in the odor that is strongly unpleasant (fishy and repugnant) then it becomes necessary to pay attention to this change as it could be indicative of some serious infection. If not treated this condition might cause you some serious social, emotional, and physiological problems.

Many women feel that this vaginal odor could be due to unhygienic habits and excessively wash their vagina. This however would only make the problem worse and it is recommended that women who are bothered by a strong vaginal odor not wash themselves too intensively as this will kill off the healthy bacteria that reside in the vaginal area. Excessive intake of antibiotics is also not helpful in restoration and may decrease your immunity.

Vaginal infections are due to a number of reasons. Excessive douching, washing, wearing of clothes that are tight and particular chemicals can lead to infections of the vagina. One of the most common causes of vaginal odor is bacterial overgrowth or bacterial vaginosis. In some cases diseases that are sexually transmitted could be the cause. Sometimes if one leaves a foreign body such as a tampon or contraceptive in the vagina it may result in unpleasant odor. Sometimes vaginal odor could be due to a condition where the opening between the rectum and vagina is abnormal (rectovaginal fistula). This allows leakage of feces into the vagina.

Here are some useful tips and home remedies for vaginal odor to help you with the problem
