urinary tract infection

When any part of the Urinary tract is infected with bacteria, mostly by the agent Escherichia Coli, a person is said to have urinary tract infection. Urine in general is made of waste products, fluid and diverse salts and does not contain any bacteria. But when bacteria are present in the kidneys and bladder, they tend to multiply in the urine causing urinary tract infection.
A bacterial infection could set in anywhere in the upper urinary tract, the kidneys and ureters, causing chills, fever, nausea, vomiting, and other symptoms. The infection could arise also in the lower urinary tract affecting the bladder and urethra. Urinary tract infection is more common in women than in men. This is due to the fact that the urethra is shorter in women.
It has also been seen that women get recurrent urinary tract infection when they are more susceptible to colonization of uropathogens in the vagina. The main reason is that the uropathogenic E. coli holds on to the uroepithelial cells, increasing the risk of contracting a urinary tract infection. The other causes for recurrence are sexual intercourse and use of spermicides. The remedy lies in medication and also abstinence and reducing the use of spermicide or avoiding it. In addition, the use of catheters also poses the risk of urinary tract infection, for which it is best to use aseptic technique for insertion and use catheters only when necessary and maintain unobstructed and closed drainage of catheter.

The common signs and symptoms of urinary tract infection in women are a burning sensation while passing urine, increased frequency of urination, and increased urge to urinate without vaginal discharge. Sometimes there could also be pain accompanied with fever. In children the symptoms would include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. In older children there could be abdominal pain and incontinence. In some cases there could be blood in the urine and the urine could be cloudy and foul smelling.

The remedies for urinary tract infection are to drink plenty of water to dilute to flush away the toxins. Drinking cranberry juice is also very effective. The tea of coriander seeds is effective in curing urinary tract infection. A decoction of the jasmine plant is a good remedy for healing the infection. Wear cotton underwear to allow moisture to escape as trapped moisture becomes a potential ground for infection. The infection could be prevented if water is consumed in plenty and regularly in order to flush the bacteria from the urinary tract. The intake of vitamin C reduces the number of harmful bacteria in the tract.
